I just had my IDrive updated on my 2017 540i to the latest version. I was having connections issues before the update and was unable to get full screen CarPlay. I then reached out to Artur at Car Diagnostic Solutions and he went above and beyond to answer any questions or concerns I had. He then determined that my IDrive needs to be updated to the latest version to resolve the issues and be able to enable full screen CarPlay. Once I drove to his place, he was able to fully update my IDrive without any problems. I was then able to get full screen CarPlay.

Word of advice: when programming BMWs, stick to high-quality cables. Using a cheap K+DCAN was a huge gamble that didn't pay off. I overestimated the error correction mechanism at such not-so-high data rates. Don't make the same mistake.
