Common Causes of AC & Heating Failure

Refrigerant leaks from deteriorated O-rings, hoses, or the condenser
Failed compressor clutch or internally damaged AC compressor
Clogged cabin air filter restricting airflow to the vents
Leaking or plugged heater core causing foggy windows and sweet smell
Broken blend door actuator preventing hot/cold air mixing
Failed blower motor or resistor stopping airflow from the vents entirely

Signs Your Auto AC or Heating System Needs Service

Air conditioning blows warm air instead of cold
Heater blows cold air even after the engine warms up
Weak airflow from the vents even at the highest fan setting
Strange sweet smell inside the cabin indicating a heater core leak
Unusual clicking or grinding noises when adjusting the temperature
Windows fog up excessively and the defroster doesn't clear them

Auto AC & Heating Tips

Run your AC system for at least 10 minutes per month even in winter to keep the seals lubricated
Replace your cabin air filter every 20,000-25,000 km for optimal airflow and air quality
If your AC stops blowing cold, get a leak test before just adding more refrigerant
A sweet antifreeze smell inside the cabin is a strong indicator of a leaking heater core
After winter, have your AC system inspected before the summer heat arrives
Don't ignore a defroster that doesn't work—it's a serious safety hazard in cold weather

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AC recharge cost in Cole Harbour? +
A basic AC recharge with leak inspection costs $150-$300. If a leak is found and a component needs replacement (condenser, evaporator, or compressor), the total repair can range from $500-$2,000+.
Why does my AC blow cold then warm? +
This is often caused by an intermittent refrigerant leak, a failing compressor clutch, or a blocked expansion valve. A professional leak test and system pressure check can pinpoint the exact cause.
How much does heater core replacement cost? +
Heater core replacement is labor-intensive because the dashboard must be partially or fully removed. Expect to pay $800-$1,800+ depending on your vehicle's complexity.
How often should I recharge my car's AC? +
A properly sealed AC system should not need regular recharging. If it needs refrigerant frequently, there's an active leak that must be repaired first to avoid environmental damage and ongoing costs.
