“Revised = April 25/26. Re: chainsaw repair. See 2 attached scans. Nice!
UPDATE = excerpt from email to shop = Dec. 8/24: "... I want to thank you for serving us this week. I think I was in your store at least 3 times. My spouse and I are very pleased with our new snow-blower. Has it been a steep learning curve? Yes. I learned what happens when a fist-sized boulder somehow makes its way past the first stage, bypasses shear-pins, and locks itself into the impeller (2nd stage). I learned what happens if one improperly opens up the housing to replace broken auger belts (stretched out cable-spring assembly). I learned what happens if one doesn't clear all the snow away, let it thaw off the engine housing, allow it all to refreeze in an uninsulated [shed]... Throughout it all, your front desk was professional and courteous to us. I'm grateful your store remains open Saturday until noon (for us weekend snow-blowing warriors). And a message to the staff (around the back): you answered our questions with humour, and without B.S.... I'm learning a lot about repairs, RT*M, cleanup, technique, and the value of heated garages.... I'll get the word out about your store & service centre...."
JUNE 2024 = Last Saturday, I picked up a 3/8” P 2-in-1 Stihl chain sharpener. I had an excellent 1st impression of this shop. Wide assortment. Unpretentious. I will continue giving them my patronage!”

Carbon buildup on intake valves reducing airflow and performance
Failing head gaskets allowing coolant and oil to mix internally

Engine Repair Tips

Never ignore a flashing Check Engine light—it indicates active damage to the catalytic converter or engine internals
Follow the manufacturer's timing belt replacement interval exactly (usually 100,000 to 160,000 km)
Use the correct grade of engine oil specified in your owner's manual
Monitor your temperature gauge regularly, especially in heavy summer traffic
Address small oil leaks before they become major engine failures
Get a compression test done if your engine has over 200,000 km to assess internal wear

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does engine repair cost in Owen Sound? +
Minor repairs like spark plugs or sensors cost $150-$500. Head gasket replacement runs $1,500-$3,000. A complete engine rebuild costs $3,000-$6,000+, while a replacement engine with installation ranges from $4,000-$8,000+.
Is it worth rebuilding an engine vs. replacing it? +
If the block and heads are in good condition, a rebuild is often more cost-effective and can result in a like-new engine. If there's severe damage (cracked block, spun bearings), a remanufactured replacement may be more practical.
How long does an engine rebuild take? +
A complete engine rebuild typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on parts availability, machining requirements, and the shop's workload.
What causes a head gasket to fail? +
The most common cause is engine overheating. When the engine exceeds its designed temperature, the head gasket material warps and fails, allowing coolant and oil to mix or leak externally.
