Auto Electrical Tips for Dawson City Drivers

Load-test your battery every autumn before sub-zero weather reduces its cranking capacity by 40% to 50%
Keep battery terminals and the main chassis ground strap clean and tight
Never disconnect a battery cable while the engine is running, as the voltage spike can fry electronic modules
If your vehicle has Auto Start-Stop, replace the battery with the correct AGM specification and register it if required
Use a smart trickle charger if your vehicle is parked unused for more than two weeks in winter

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does alternator or starter replacement cost in Dawson City? +
In Dawson City, battery replacement typically costs $180 to $350 (or $280 to $450 for AGM batteries). Starter replacement usually runs $350 to $750, and alternator replacement ranges from $450 to $900 depending on engine accessibility.
How do I tell if my dead car is the battery, alternator, or starter? +
If the car jump-starts easily and stays running, the battery was likely weak or drained. If the car dies again shortly after disconnecting the booster cables (or the red battery light stays on while driving), the alternator is not charging. If the battery tests full at 12.6V but you only hear a single click when turning the key, the starter or starter relay is usually at fault.
How long does a car battery last in Canada? +
Most car batteries in Canada last 3 to 5 years. Extreme winter cold and hot summer under-hood temperatures gradually sulfate the lead plates until the battery can no longer hold enough cold-cranking amps.
What is a parasitic battery drain test? +
A parasitic drain test measures how many milliamps your car draws after all computers go to sleep (normally under 50 mA). The technician measures voltage drop across fuses to find the exact module, glovebox light, or aftermarket accessory draining your battery overnight.
